Johns Hopkins Children's Center Study:
Laboring women supported by a doula (with no pain relief medication) experienced
the same levels of pain as women who received epidural analgesia, both
during and after labor. Additionally, there were no differences in a laboring
woman's ability to cope with pain whether she had an epidural or the continuous
emotional support of an experienced doula.
Statistics:
When considering the presence of a doula at your birth, keep in mind the
documented benefits. According to "The
Doula Book" by Klaus, Kennell and Klaus, 2002, a birth doula can offer:
45% reduction in Cesarean rate
25% shorter labor
10%-60% reduction in request for epidurals
50% reduction in oxytocin (pitocin) use
31% reduction in analgesia use
34% reduction in forceps delivery
